Licensing

Exclusive vs. non-exclusive licenses

When to choose exclusivity, what it costs, and how it interacts with territory and period.

3 min read

Exclusivity determines whether the rights holder can license the same asset to anyone else within your agreed scope.

  • Non-exclusive: the creator may license the asset to others. Lower cost, ideal for most use cases.
  • Exclusive: you're the only licensee within the agreed territory and period. Higher cost, reserves the rights to you.

Exclusivity is always scoped — exclusive in one territory or period does not block licensing elsewhere unless your terms say so.
